Is the Maryland Government Employees’ Union Under Attack? Yes!

March 8, 2018 Law

Right now in Maryland, all government employees that benefit from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) bargaining power must pay them dues. But Mark Janus wants to change that.  He is a government employee in Illinois that is not happy about paying his union dues because he doesn’t agree with his union’s tactics.  Janus doesn’t care about the other hundreds of thousands of government workers that benefit from AFSCME’s achievements, so he is bringing his case to the Supreme Court.  Government employees have superior healthcare, disability benefits and pensions but all Janus cares about is proving his point.  The Supreme Court is likely to decide in his favor, hopefully Unions will remain strong and government employees will step up and support the AFSCME even if the Supreme Court doesn’t.
